Temporary Power for UAE Oilfield Construction and Commissioning Phases

The construction and commissioning phases of an oil and gas facility present unique power supply challenges. Permanent power systems are not yet available, loads are unpredictable and constantly changing, the workforce is large, and the pressure to achieve first oil or first gas on schedule is intense. Getting temporary power right from the outset is critical to keeping the entire project on track.

Understanding Temporary Power Requirements

Temporary power during oilfield construction must serve a wide variety of loads simultaneously: construction tools and equipment, site lighting, accommodation camps and catering facilities, offices and communications, testing and commissioning equipment, and pre-commissioning activities such as flushing, chemical cleaning, and instrument calibration. Each phase of the project has a different power profile, and the system must be flexible enough to adapt as the project progresses.

Scalable Generation: Build as You Go

The most effective approach to temporary oilfield power is a modular, scalable generation system that can grow with the project. Starting with the capacity needed for early civil works and camp facilities, additional generator sets can be brought online as loads increase during mechanical and electrical installation phases. This avoids the cost of over-specifying for peak load from day one and ensures that generation assets are always working at efficient load levels.

Commissioning Power: Special Considerations

The commissioning phase places particularly demanding requirements on temporary power. Motor megger testing, pump running trials, control system proving, and instrument loop checking all require stable, clean power with precise voltage and frequency. Some commissioning activities also create large, sudden load changes that can destabilise poorly sized or configured generation systems. Specifying high-quality generation equipment with advanced governors and automatic voltage regulators is essential for commissioning-phase power.

Planning for a Smooth Handover

As the project approaches mechanical completion and the permanent power systems are energised, careful planning is required to transfer loads from temporary to permanent supply without disruption to commissioning activities. A phased handover plan, developed in coordination with the project electrical team and the power provider, ensures continuity and avoids the commissioning delays that can occur when temporary power is removed prematurely.
