What is a Zone 2 generator?
A Zone 2 generator is a generator adapted to run safely in a Zone 2 hazardous area: a place where an explosive gas atmosphere is not expected in normal operation and, if it occurs, lasts only a short time. The adaptations remove the engine's main ignition risks, runaway on ingested gas and hot exhaust particles, and the unit is certified for that use.
| Zone | Explosive gas atmosphere is… | Generator implication |
|---|---|---|
| Zone 0 | Present continuously or for long periods | Not a location for a generator |
| Zone 1 | Likely in normal operation | Needs a higher level of protection than Zone 2 |
| Zone 2 | Not likely in normal operation; if present, only briefly | Zone 2 converted and certified generator |
| Safe area | Not expected | Standard generator |
How is a SINTAQA generator converted for Zone 2?
SINTAQA 1,250 kVA generator units can be converted for Zone 2 applications using the required certified safety components and project-specific modifications. Certification and documentation are prepared for the converted unit in accordance with the applicable project and client requirements. Standard fleet units are not delivered as Zone 2 by default; conversion is project-specific.

What does SINTAQA's Zone 2 package include?
The generator is converted using two ATEX-certified protective components, an air intake shutoff valve and a stainless steel exhaust spark arrestor, and an ATEX certificate is then issued for that specific SINTAQA unit, not for a generator type. Product certificates for both components come with it.
| Component | Function | Specification |
|---|---|---|
| Air intake shutoff valve | Closes automatically to stop engine runaway if flammable gas is drawn in with the intake air | Chalwyn D-series, II 2G Ex h IIB T3 Gb; ATEX- and ADNOC-approved |
| Exhaust spark arrestor | Stops hot particles leaving the exhaust | Chalwyn, stainless steel 316L, EN 1834; approved for Zone 1 and Zone 2; ATEX- and ADNOC-approved |
| Certification | Documents the components and the converted unit | ATEX product certificates for the components plus an ATEX certificate for the specific converted unit |
Are all generators Zone 2 certified?
No. Certified SINTAQA units have already operated on client sites. Ask for the unit-specific documentation before mobilisation.
What does the site operator need to confirm?
The hazardous-area classification of the generator location, the gas group and temperature class required, and any company-specific requirements. Other measures the classification may call for, such as gas detection or requirements for cable entries and fuel equipment, are agreed per project.
- Hazardous-area classification drawing showing the generator location
- Gas group and temperature class required at that location
- Required load, voltage and frequency, and whether the load is inside or outside the zone
- Operator standards and permit requirements (for example ADNOC group company requirements)
- Fuel tank location and refuelling arrangements
The ATEX framework is set out in Directive 2014/34/EU; area classification for gas atmospheres follows IEC 60079-10-1.
Zone 2 generators: FAQ
What is a Zone 2 generator?
A generator adapted to operate in a Zone 2 hazardous area, where an explosive gas atmosphere is not expected in normal operation and would only be present briefly. The adaptations stop the engine from becoming an ignition source: an air intake shutoff valve prevents runaway if gas is drawn in, and an exhaust spark arrestor stops hot particles leaving the exhaust.
Are all SINTAQA generators Zone 2 certified?
No. Certified SINTAQA units have already operated on client sites.
Can a Zone 2 generator be used in Zone 1?
No. Zone 1 is a higher-risk classification, where an explosive atmosphere is likely in normal operation, and needs a different level of protection. The Zone 2 package described here is for Zone 2 locations only.
What documents come with a Zone 2 rental generator?
ATEX product certificates for the fitted protective components and the ATEX certificate issued for the specific converted unit. Additional documents required by the site operator, for example for a permit to work, are agreed at the enquiry stage.
Are the generators approved by ADNOC?
ADNOC-approved generator units are available for applicable ADNOC projects. ADNOC-approved fuel-tank configurations are available. ADNOC-approved components are used where required by project specifications. The air intake shutoff valves and spark arrestors used for Zone 2 conversion are ATEX- and ADNOC-approved components. Separately, sINTAQA is registered as a vendor with ADNOC.
