50 Hz or 60 Hz? What Frequency Means for Generator Rental in the GCC

The short answer: the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain run their grids at 50 Hz, and Saudi Arabia runs at 60 Hz. A rental generator must match the frequency of the equipment it powers, not the country it sits in. The required frequency is set by the connected equipment nameplate and the project electrical system: some imported marine, industrial and construction equipment operates at 60 Hz even inside the UAE. Getting this wrong can overheat motors, saturate transformers and overload pumps.

Grid frequency and voltage across the GCC

CountryFrequencyTypical LV supply
UAE50 Hz400/230 V
Qatar50 Hz415/240 V
Kuwait50 Hz415/240 V
Oman50 Hz415/240 V
Bahrain50 Hz400/230 V
Saudi Arabia60 Hz380/220 V (400/230 V on newer networks)

Where 60 Hz shows up inside a 50 Hz country

Most projects in the UAE never need to think about frequency. The exceptions are predictable:

  • Marine and offshore: some barges, jack-ups, dredgers and vessels have 60 Hz onboard systems; check the equipment nameplates rather than the country of build.
  • Oil and gas packages: skids and compressors designed to US standards, or shipped from Saudi projects.
  • Imported plant: equipment sourced from North America with 460 V / 60 Hz motors.
  • Cross-border projects: fleets moving between Saudi Arabia and the rest of the GCC.

One example from our own fleet: SINTAQA currently supplies two 60 Hz generators to NMDC Energy on a barge supporting marine construction at Hudayriat Island, Abu Dhabi, while the shore side runs at 50 Hz.

What happens if the frequency is wrong

SituationWhat happensRisk
60 Hz motor on 50 Hz at the same voltageMagnetic flux rises about 20%Overheating, insulation damage
60 Hz motor on 50 Hz at reduced voltageRuns about 17% slowerPumps and fans deliver less flow
50 Hz motor on 60 HzRuns about 20% faster; centrifugal pump load rises by roughly 70%Motor overload, tripping
60 Hz transformer on 50 Hz at rated voltageCore flux rises about 20%Saturation, overheating
Clocks, timers, older control gearTiming errorsProcess faults

The pump numbers come from the affinity laws: pump power scales with the cube of speed, so a 20% increase in speed gives about 1.2³ ≈ 1.73 times the load.

How rental generators handle 50 and 60 Hz

A generator's frequency comes from engine speed. A 4-pole alternator produces 50 Hz at 1,500 rpm and 60 Hz at 1,800 rpm. Many rental diesel generators can be set to either frequency at mobilisation by adjusting the governor and voltage regulator. Three points to know:

  1. Output changes with frequency. Because the engine turns faster at 60 Hz, the same unit is usually rated higher at 60 Hz than at 50 Hz. Always size against the rating at the frequency you will actually use.
  2. Voltage must be set together with frequency. A 60 Hz site typically needs 440–480 V (or 380 V in Saudi Arabia), while a 50 Hz site needs 400–415 V.
  3. Transformers must match too. If the project needs a step-up to 11 kV or a step-down for special loads, the transformer must be rated for the operating frequency.

Every unit in SINTAQA's fleet is a new 1,250 kVA generator that can be set to 50 Hz or 60 Hz at mobilisation, so the same fleet serves UAE onshore sites, marine projects and Saudi-standard equipment.

When one site needs both frequencies at the same time, the usual solutions are two separate generator groups (one at 50 Hz, one at 60 Hz) or a static frequency converter. Converters are common for shore power, where 60 Hz vessels connect to a 50 Hz port supply.

Checklist for your rental enquiry

State these in the RFQ and the quote will be right the first time:

  • Frequency and voltage required at the load (from equipment nameplates, not the country standard)
  • Whether any loads need a different frequency from the rest
  • Largest motor and its starting method (DOL, star-delta, soft starter or VFD)
  • Earthing system and neutral requirements
  • Whether a transformer is needed, and at what voltage
  • Site type: onshore, barge, offshore, hazardous area

Frequently asked questions

Is Dubai 50 Hz or 60 Hz?

Dubai and the rest of the UAE run at 50 Hz, with 400/230 V low-voltage supply.

Is Saudi Arabia 50 Hz or 60 Hz?

Saudi Arabia runs at 60 Hz. It is the only GCC country that does.

Can a 50 Hz generator run at 60 Hz?

Many rental diesel generators can be switched between 50 and 60 Hz by resetting engine speed and voltage regulation. Output and voltage settings change, so the unit must be configured and tested before it goes into service.

Can I run 60 Hz equipment on a 50 Hz supply?

Some equipment tolerates it at reduced voltage, but motors run slower and transformers can saturate. For continuous operation, supply the frequency the equipment was designed for.

Why do ships and barges in the UAE often use 60 Hz?

Their onboard electrical systems are often designed for 60 Hz, so they need a 60 Hz supply wherever they operate. The country of build is not a reliable guide (Japan, for example, uses both 50 Hz and 60 Hz); the equipment nameplate and the vessel's electrical system decide.

Can SINTAQA supply 60 Hz generators in the UAE?

Yes. All SINTAQA rental generators are new 1,250 kVA units that switch between 50 Hz and 60 Hz, and the company currently runs 60 Hz units for NMDC Energy on a barge at Hudayriat Island, Abu Dhabi.
